Most of us try to cut costs where we can and we are pretty adept at shopping online for the cheapest books or even electronic equipment. Yet when it comes to house and car insurance and even travel insurance we are completely mystified on how to compare like with like. The on-line forms for each company are often very different and even if we enter the same base data for each quote it is often difficult to fully understand what each quote covers us for and what it does not.
The easiest thing to do to try and understand this is to make a spreadsheet (or take notes) on what each policy covers. It takes time to go through all the small print on the quotes, but at least this way you have a visual aid to understanding exactly what is included and what is not.
It can make a real difference to your choice of insurance and you might even choose to opt for a more expensive policy as a result. For example some travel polices might not cover winter sports whilst some might, and some companies might be more generous in the amounts covered for personal theft or injury.
It is also worth noting whether they have any official settlement policy on their quote. Some companies are very easy to deal with and settle almost straightaway whereas you have to go through a whole lot of bureaucracy to be paid by others.
